Many martial sports, such as Boxing, Muay Thai, Judo, or Jujitsu, focus on a subset of these four skills, showcasing skill and ability. But what works in the ring in a sanctioned fight, with standard rules, weight classes, a referee, and medical staff on hand, are not the same skills when jumped by an unknown attacker in a dark alley.

Since the start of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), the combat world has realized that a specialized fighter with just one or two skill sets cannot win anymore. Even Brazilian Ju Jitsu—or BJJ—gained considerable respect early in the UFC's history, and fighters no longer win without other skill sets, such as stand-up fighting.

In our Shaolin Wing Chun system, Jujitsu/BJJ skills are found in the realm of Earth skills: grappling, sweeps, throws, takedowns, chokes, locks, breaks, and submissions, standing up or on the ground.

A complete fighter should be able to use all four skills of Ti, Da, Shuai, and Na as a base skill in martial arts at all ranges of hand-to-hand combat. Twenty years of practicing just one skill set does not prepare you for the real world.
