Thank you, Sigung. Once again you have captured the truth in essence of what is real and what is illusion. I have the experience of both types of instructors throughout my martial arts journey. My first instructor, Dan Gilliland, is a man of great faith, knowledge and integrity and emphasized character as well as martial arts expression. My second and third instructors in aikido and “Wing Chun/JKD” respectively, had little organization and were stylistically based. There was never a focus on the character of the student in the expression of their “style,” thus there was little longevity in their students staying with them. At this point in my life, in this part of my personal journey the money isn’t the issue. Character development is my primary focus. Becoming a better man, husband, father, brother, son, friend, worker, instructor…this in the focus in my life today. That is what I have discovered here in the Mengs family: a path to self-actualization through the practice of martial arts. Sifu Daniel Duran discussed this path with me the first day I met with him. My Sifu, Master Brad Ryan continues to not only teach this but is a wonderful example of right living. Grand Master Benny Meng has given us this gift of truth in his tireless efforts in research and sharing. I am grateful for the opportunity to learn and express and teach our system, but am truly fulfilled by the personal journey.
