During one of the weekends I was training with Master Lin, I witnessed Suhu Lin's approach to an Intro class. It so happened that the Intro member was a well-experienced Internal system martial artist. Not only did the person have many years of teaching experience, but he also traveled to China on a regular basis and received certification from China as an Internal system instructor. Suhu Lin's class was very hands-on, with a lot of personal attention and featured a good balance of workout and lecture. After the Intro, the student was very impressed and said he would get back with Suhu Lin on his decision to join the school. The next time that prospective student came back, he asked to speak with Suhu Lin privately. Basically, he said that in all the years he's spent in studing the internal approach to martial arts with many well-experienced Sifus in China, he felt he understood the theories but it wasn't until the Intro class that he experienced a Master that actually has the skill to express the theory in action.
Master Lin can demonstrate Yang/Hard Energy as well as Yin/Soft Energy, both offensively and defensively - and everything in between. Suhu Lin calls this "Yang Yang, Yang Yin, Yin Yang, Yin Yin Energies." Of course, I have personal, hands-on experience with Suhu Lin and feeling his energy has been a great treasure and an eye-opening experience to the beauty, depth, and breadth of skill in the martial arts. The best thing is that Suhu Lin does not limit himself to speaking only about Internal or External, instead he teaches about Energy in all it's possible states of being. As Curator of the Ving Tsun Museum, it is exciting to know that this level of skill exists within the HKB Wing Chun martial arts family.

What an exciting, fun-filled weekend for a martial art fanatic (me!).
I just want to share a quick summary of my weekend with Suhu Lin.
After an 8 hour drive, I got to the Suhu Lin's home Friday morning. We spent an hour discussing general stuff to the latest news in the Wing Chun community and then started the private training. Afterwards, we went to the Black Flag HQ for official Instructor's Training. It was very professional. The first part consisted of lecture with written hand-outs to support the topics, which lasted for a few hours.
After a late lunch, we started back up around 5 and finished the lecture part of the Instructor's Course and I watched Suhu Lin give an Orientation Class. As we finished the lecture class, I noticed it had started snowing outside. Then, we had regular classes for 90 minutes. After class, we were already under blizzard conditions where we barely made it home. That evening we were surprised to find out that we were going to be hit with one of the worst storms to hit the East Coast.
Saturday consisted of more private lessons at Suhu Lin's home, staring at 11a. That lasted until 1p. Due to the snow storm, we couldn't go back to the HQ and classes were cancelled...but at least I was stuck with the right person. Basically we spent the whole day on additional training, discussion, and lecture, not to mention all the delicious food cooks up by Simo Lin. I ended up with about 3 sessions of private lessons with Suhu Lin on Saturday.
Meanwhile, I'd been hearing about Suhu Lin's special 5 hours Sunday Elite class, which is reserved for Black Sash Club and Instructor Candidates only. We were hoping that the storm would be clear so I would get to experience this class. The good news was that the storm was over but the roads were not cleared. We were basically snowed in as his subdivision hadn't been plowed. We spent several hours shoveling snow but didn't manage to clear out enough to get to the school. But then again, normally there were an average of 10 people showing up on Sunday. We had one student, Larry, drive 3 hours because the roads were better, but had to park in car and walk a mile to reach Suhu Lin's home. Lucky for me, one student showed up so I had a partner in addition to Suhu Lin. Basically, we went through intensive training from 10a to 2p. At the end of the training, all my major muscle groups from my legs to my hands were completely fatigued - which was part of the intention.
Without giving any technical details, I just want to say that I travel around, all over the world, from when I was young to even now. I've experienced many workshops, seminars, training formats and instructor's training. Out of many, there are three that I often speak about in terms of level of intensity: one was with the professional Wushu team in China, two was with the Korean TKD National Team in Korea, and three was as at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. Those experiences were well-structured programs conducted by professionals for advanced martial artists or top athletes. Now I have one more precious experience to talk about but this one is special because the previous were more the product of modern era, institutionalized training methods where my experience with Suhu Lin for a four-hour training session qualifies in the true sense of traditional practice: no fancy training facility or equipment, but highly effective, intense methods guided by a well-skill and experienced, motivated Sifu which does not hold back the student. It really represents the traditional training of the past in a very positive light.
After the exciting experience, it was lucky for me that a neighbor with a tractor volunteered to plow the street enough for me to reach the main road, allowing me to leave after a late lunch. Due to the bad conditions on the road, it took me 8 hours to drive 250 miles. I drove non-stop until 4am, thinking I would be tired but I guess my adrenaline kept me up all night. After a nap, I made it thru with the rest of the 250 miles to Huber at 4p and taught the four evening classes.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Suhu Lin for the great experience and to be part of the instructor's corp.

Thanks Ben and Will,
It's been 23 years since I started teaching professionally and 16 years since I took on the responsibility of searching for the truth behind the myths of Wing Chun, which is the art that I love and teach. Even though I was one of the best and well-qualified Master Instructors of Wing Chun by the time I opened the VTM, I continued to seek out and learn from a variety of Wing Chun traditions traveling to all corners of the world until I discovered the secrets that lie beneath the Wing Chun martial arts, experiencing all the approaches from many tradition at the deepest levels. This journey leads me now to the Black Flag Wing Chun family.
Ever since Sifu Lin had treaded me with respect and open up the door for my continue research into the beautiful art of Black Flag Wing Chun. Sifu Lin is sincere, hard working, open minded, expert in his field, and a great leader for his art. Sifu Lin's Kung Fu family has been great, very friendly yet we train hard and long hours with sweat always and blood sometimes. It is my honor now that I am accepted in the instructor's program. What a great way to start out the New Year. Thanks again Sifu Lin and the HKB Wing Chun family.

HKB Instructor Training on 07/27-07/31 at HKB International HQ in Fredericksburg, VA
Overall, the past week was a great week for training; with an overseas visit from Instructor Candidate, Sifu Segio of the International Wing tjun Kung fu Association [IWKA] – with headquarters [HQ] in China and Amsterdam – as well as visiting first level Hek Ki Boen [HKB] Instructor, Sifu Benny Meng of HKB Meng of Dayton, Ohio. Tuesday, July 27, 2010 It all started out with Sifu Lin's student, Benjamin Blalock, driving Sifu Lin, and Kenneth Rimestad, another student, to pick up Sifu Sergio at Reagan National Airport. After picking up Sifu Sergio, they decided to stop for lunch, at the Olive Garden in Woodbridge, Virginia. Despite the best efforts of everyone involved, Sifu Sergio – himself of Italian heritage –could not be fooled; as it turns out, Olive Garden is not quite authentic Italian cuisine. Upon arriving at the HKB bukuan, Sifu Lin immediately proceeded to conduct Sifu Sergio’s instructor training. Sifu Lin spent the first few hours working on the Sam Chien Po form, emphasizing HKB’s unique engine/DNA. After private training, Sifu Sergio seized the opportunity to participate in the public evening classes, both at 7pm for the Elite Black Sash Members and at 8:30 for beginner level students. After intense hours of training, everyone left satisfied, in full credence with the HKB motto, with a sweaty body, a smarter mind, and a smiling spirit. Wednesday, July 28, 2010 The day started with private training conducted by Sifu Lin at 10:00am. Sifu Lin and Sifu Sergio went over the official syllabus of the instructor program. After taking a break for lunch, Sifu Sergio continued to train diligently until it was, again, time for the evening’s public class. It was a long, and difficult, training day, but it was fun, and worth all the sweat. Thursday, July 29, 2010 Around 9:00am, Sifu Meng arrived after a long overnight drive from Ohio. Sifu Sergio, Sifu Meng, and Sifu Lin enjoyed a wonderful breakfast, cooked by Simu. They then went to the HQ school, where there was a morning class at 10:00am. Sifu Sergio and Sifu Meng had the opportuntiy to participate in the class. Once class was over, Sifu Lin continued teaching and going over instructor modules for Sifu Meng and Sifu Sergio. After a short lunch break at 4:00pm, at the local Thai restaurant, the training continued until 7:00pm. At which point, many of the other students, both Elite and Orientation members, began to arrive to participate in the group wing chun discussion and interaction. Both Sifu Meng and Sifu Sergio started the discussion by explaining their previous martial arts experience, especially regarding their journey in Wing Chun. They also shared their first experience of when they started to train HKB. The uniqueness of the HKB wing chun, as based upon the chan buddhist concept of attachment was also discussed, as well as many other important concepts and principles within HKB that is unique from the other lineages of wing chun that both researchers have encountered, respectively. The discussion went on to discuss how these independent researchers, seperated by not only a continent, but by the varieties of their wing chun experience, have, despite these odds, still came to the same conclusion: that the HKB system is a true treasure, the final stop on their respective journeys, and the new direction for their organizations.
The discussion was continued to discuss the future missions, and current established plans for spreading and preserving HKB wing chun in 4 different continents. The last word went to Sifu Lin, who stressed his role as current leader and the successor of the system; emphasizing on how HKB is its own unique identity, taking time to point out the importance of maintaining the HKB identity by not classifying it as something which it is not, and subsequently clarifying that HKB Wing Chun is not the same as Shaolin Wing Chun, in which HKB Wing Chun should never be called Shaolin Wing Chun.HKB Wing Chun is HKB Wingchun. Last but not least, Sifu Lin also talked about how cross-training other styles, including other lineage of wing chun, would damage the progression of the practitioner achieving the HKB skill. He also gave some tips to maintaining training focus for HKB Wing Chun without mixing it with other styles including other lineage of Wing Chun (if acquiring the HKB Skills is something important for the practitioner). After all, it was a great evening discussion, and in the next couple weeks, there are plans to put the discussions/interview on our new HKB video channel. Friday, July 30, 2010 The instructor training continued, starting in the morning. Sifu Meng and Sifu Sergio was Training hard with Master Lin in the HKB HQ in VA. In the evening, the Ohio group arrived, consisting of Missy Pruden (Instructor Candidate) and Benny Meng’s family. Vincent Meng and Missy Prudent participated in the evening training.
Saturday, July 31, 2010 After long hours of hard instructor training, conducted by Sifu Lin, Sifu Sergio ended his training and had to go to the airport to travel for his seminars. He will be returning the week of August 10th for additional instructor training. Sifu Meng also had to depart that morning. Everyone had a good training week with measureable improvements. Sifu Lin is looking forward to Sifu Sergio and Sifu Meng’s return this same month of August for additional training.
