On Saturday April 25th,2009, four of Huber youth warrior league students(Vincent, Taylor, Ryan, and Christian) competed in Mason, Ohio.  All four did great! We had two first timers, Christian and Ryan who both did a wonderful job! But, I need to share a great story with everyone. Ryan is a 14 year old. Although there were several competitors at his level they were all much heavier than Ryan( although we did'nt know this at the time). After refreshing Ryan on how things go he politely sat on the side of the mat waiting his turn. When it became his turn the referee approached Ryan and myself. He explained that since there was no one near his weight class there was a solution. He could fight a blackbelt who was his age and weight. I told Ryan that it was his decision since it was his first time. He chose to fight the blackbelt. Okayyyyy....I'm impressed already! Well Ryan stepped on the mat, did his bowing etc..  The referee started the fight.
The blackbelt came out doing flying kicks and Ryan cut him short everytime. Ryan started doing kicks that actually knocked his opponent out of bounds several times. I kept looking at the point machine, no score!? One of the judges saw this and stopped the match. Again the referee comes to Ryan and myself and explains that the machine malfunctioned so that match did'nt count although the judges said Ryan scored the most points, it would'nt be fair. sooooo, The match starts all over again. Ryan and his opponent was giving the crowd a great show exchanging kicks and blows. The score was close with Ryan ahead 8-7 with 5 seconds to go. Right at the last second the opponent got a kick in and tied the match. NOW we had to have a tie breaker and the opponent got first point. Well when the judges heard me congratulate Ryan for doing so well in his first match, they all started commenting on how great he did and that our school can't let him stop because he has a great future in competing. There was a grand Master who commented   that Ryan was one of the most well disciplined competitors that they have seen in a long time. They thanked Ryan for giving them such an action filled match. With all the judges gathered around Ryan and myself you would have thought Ryan won the tie breaker but to me, he shines as an all around winner. Congratulations to all of our competitors! You all rock!!  Missy Smiley

Dear Students, Parents, and Friends,

This weekend, we had wonderful results with our competitors at Ahn's Classic in Cincinnati.

Vincent Meng, being the most experienced and senior rank, competed in breaking, forms, and sparring. In breaking, he did the advanced techniques of back spinning wheel kick, hammerfist into the splits, and flying jump sidekick -- it took him two tries to break his first board with the wheel kick, which is probably why he didn't place. In breaking, you often win by doing a more simple technique but break on the first attempt with clean technique. In forms, he did well but competition was tough; there were more than 15 black belts in his division. In sparring, he had three matches. He won the first match 9-to-2. In the second, he took some punishment from a competitor 20 lbs heavier but won with a similar 9-to-2 score. The third match was the toughest, going two rounds and finishing with a tie score. He lost in sudden-death overtime, taking Silver in the Black Belt division. After his second fight, he had less than 2 minutes before his final match and his asthma kicked up. It was a good training prelude to the upcoming state championship.

Taylor Hunt took first in forms, which was a great accomplishment because her primary training background was in kung fu. She learned the Taekwondo forms so she could compete and did very, very well. In sparring, she went against tough opponents, fought well but didn't place.

Our next two competitors have recently joined members of the Fight League and we are very proud of them. The youngest competitor, Christian Campbell. Before he joined the team, he was working on his attention span and focus in class. His behavior during this first tournament speaks volumes about his character: he was disciplined, had excellent self-control, answering "Yes Sir" and "No Sir" correctly. To me, that was the best showcase of his skill and development, even though he didn't win his fight.

Our last member, Ryan Miller, has been with me since he was a mighty might and now he's a teenager. Ryan's been working hard but hasn't reached his black belt yet. Feeling that his fighting skills were lacking, he joined the fight team. After three months of training, he participated in his first tournament. I was no there ring-side, Ms. Missy was coaching him and had already posted what she said about his performance.

Congratulations to all competitors and appreciation to Mrs. Meng and Ms. Missy for coaching.

Sincerely,
Master Meng
