Testing Outside of the Box

On October 28, 2006 The All Star Karate Nationals was held in Cincinnati, Ohio. This is a National tournament with competitors coming from many different states and representing many different styles. Meng's Hung Fa Kwoon of Cincinnati entered two competitors. It was the first time either student had attended a tournament, let alone competed. I firmly beleive that all knowledge should be tested to prove it's validity. As a result of this test:
CONGRATULATIONS !!!
Michael Dumas - 1st Place in Intermediate Fighting
William "Bill" Linton - 2nd Place in Beginner Fighting
We have seen the benenfits of our curriculum. It allows the student to develop their body karma by experiencing Saan Kiu, "outside of the Box training". This training provides the foundation for the Weng Kiu " Inside of the Box training" that will elevate the students understanding of Hung Fa Yi as a martial Science.
As our Grand Master has stated "Outside of the Box and Inside of the box are two sides of the same coin". In our training, using our curriculum, this has been tested and proven.

Rules and determinations for Tournament
The rules were the same as most tournaments. They required Head, Hand, and Foot gear with the "foam" covering. The contact was made by kicking and punching, no take downs, groin strikes, or kicking below the waistline. The head and torso were the primary targets. In the scoring; one point was given for a punch and two for a kick. Each competitor was allowed to kick or punch to any legal area.
It was a point tournament using two minute rounds. The match was stopped after each point and continued thereafter until the time was exhasted. the winner was the one with the most points in the round.
The Divisions were divided as beginners (white belts), Intermediate (underbelts), and advanced (black belts). The competitors were sorted by weight and size. If there were not enough competitors in your division you would move up to the next division. Mike is on Grade 2 and faught a brown belt. Bill is on Grade 2 and faught a higher rank belt also.
I wanted them to experience "Saan Kiu" fighting to rid them of any illusions of the Saan Kiu and Wing Kiu relationship or System Vs Style. I teach them that if you have a superior system, but have not achieved the level of wing Kiu, and your opponent has developed his saan kiu skill to a high level you better bring your "A" game. If you train inside of the box only and do not have the "Body Karma" or combat experience necessary for combat you will not be able to defend against the "outside of the Box" techniques.
Regard,
JohnL
