Wednesday March 9th

I flew out of Dayton to New York City, then drove down to meet with Sifu Ian Fusco of the I.E.F. Martial Arts Academy/ Sports Medicine Center in North Wales in Philadelphia. This was our first official meeting, face-to-face (we’ve been communicating over the phone and through Facebook). We met in the late afternoon, and he gave me a tour of his school. It’s a big and nice facility. Sifu Ian is a very well-experienced martial arts instructor, with a background in Mantis, Taiji, and Arnis, in addition to his Wing Chun training. We spent the whole night discussing Wing Chun and martial arts. I believe even in just this first visit Sifu Ian had a paradigm shift with what I share with him that evening. He was very excited and looking forward to continue his journey in the martial arts with me. He was very impressed with what I shared, including a glimpse of the HKB system. And I am always impressed when a well-experienced Sifu is still open-minded and looking to grow. That’s definitely my impression of Sifu Ian. I’m looking forward to officially meeting his kung fu family during my first workshop at his school, set for Saturday May 28th.

Thursday March 10th

I flew out of New York for Madrid, Spain where I have a contact in development for the VTM. I then flew straight from Madrid to Fortaleza, Brazil.

Friday March 11th

I arrived in Fortaleza in the late afternoon. Sifu Alex Magnos and his students picked me up from the airport. I saw many new faces. Among the new faces was Master Paulo Braga Filho, a leading authority in Korean martial arts and the highest ranking Hapkido Master in Brazil.

After settling in and having dinner, we had a light discussion on martial arts and ended the day so I could catch up on my sleep due to the long flight times. The weather was warm and humid, which makes for a sharp contrast to the cold and dry winter here in Dayton.

Saturday March 12th

This was the first day of workshops, hosted at Master Paulo’s school. It is a fantastic school, featuring a fully-equipped gym with many machines and free weights, a fully matted training hall… plus a full-size swimming pool!

The topic was on Wing Chun Combat, dealing with the ranges of combat, and how Wing Chun operates in and against long range, middle range, and close range fighting. There were over 40 participants, with very diverse backgrounds including many Wing Chun lineages, Hapkido, Taekwondo, Karate, Krav Maga and even active members of the Police and Military, plus professional bodyguards.

After the very successful workshop, I spent the rest of the day giving tests on the VTM Certification.

Sunday March 13th

The day started with my second workshop, again at Master Paulo’s school. This time the topic was on Wing Chun for Self-Defense. There was an even greater turn-out on this second day.

After another successful day, many new friendships were developed and new contacts were established. The police members were very impressed with the practicality of the material I shared with them, but I didn’t cover just the physical techniques of Wing Chun. I also covered tactics, strategy, concepts, and the benefits in the quality of your life by studying the martial arts. I also reminded the professional teachers that we are in an industry that is foundational to all human activities: personal and professional, because we help people to become fitter and healthier, safer with inner confidence, and become a better and happier human being. Without those three things – health, safety, and happiness – all other activities will not flourish. For example, commerce does not develop to a high degree in places that aren’t safe.

After this second workshop, many of Sifu Alex’s students signed up for the Hek Ki Boen distance learning program. We spent the rest of the day and night training on HKB knowledge and skill from the HKB Orientation Program.

Monday March 14th

In the morning we got together and did additional HKB training for new distance program members in Fortaleza. Then, I went to Sifu Marcos Teixeira’s school, Institute Wing Chun, Fortaleza, Brazil to do my third workshop on the VTM Certification Curriculum. This was my first trip to this school and meeting many of his great students. Sifu Marcos is currently teaching Hong Kong Wing Chun based on the VTM Curriculum. He also expressed interest to learn the Hek Ki Boen lineage as well.

After the workshop during the day, we all had time to shower and get changed in time for a very special event: Sifu Alex Magnos completed the Baai Si Ceremony and became my newest Disciple. The ceremony was held at a Chinese restaurant (we booked the whole place). Sifu Alex is my first Disciple in Brazil. A Disciple not only followed in the same footsteps as the teacher but also becomes a guardian of the arts the Master teaches. Sifu Alex is also a member of the Hek Ki Boen Instructor Certification Program. He is fully committed to become a representative of the HKB lineage as his main identity, a representative of the VTM, and a full-time, professional martial arts instructor helping to raise the professionalism and quality of martial arts offered in Brazil. Ever since we met in 2005, Sifu Alex has shown his loyalty, determination, discipline, and dedication. We have weathered many storms together and he has followed my guidance through the experiences and trainings in several lineages of Wing Chun: Ip Man, Hung Fa Yi, and now Hek Ki Boen. In Brazil, he is an instructor to many students at the instructor level themselves and he also has students in many different States throughout the country.

After the Baai Si, I also awarded the VTM Hong Kong Wing Chun Certification to the following people:

In addition to the Wing Chun activities, Master Paulo formally asked to become my student in the Korean martial art of Taekwondo. Currently, he is studying Wing Chun under Sifu Alex.

After all the festivities, pictures, and dinner, we had the whole restaurant to ourselves but I would have rather had authentic Brazilian food because the Chinese food was less Chinese than the Brazilian food would have been Brazilian.

Tuesday March 15th

My last day in Brazil was spent mostly on Kung Fu Life – discussion about the nature of things and having fellowship with each other.

Quarta-Feira, 9 de Março

Voei de Dayton para Nova Iorque, então fui encontrar-me com Sifu Ian Fusco da I.E.F. Academia de Artes Marciais / Centro de Esportes e Medicina em North Wales, Filadelfia. Essa foi o primeiro encontro oficial, cara-a-cara (já vinhamos nos comunicando por telefone e através do Facebook). Nos encotramos no final da tarde, e ele me mostrou sua escola. É uma ótimo espaço e muito grande também. Sifu Ian já bem experiente como instrutor de artes marciais, com um histórico que conta Louva-a-deus, Taiji e Arnis, bem como treinamento em Wing Chun. Passamos toda a noite discutindo Wing Chun e artes marciais. Acredito que já nesta primeira visita Sifu Ian teve uma mudança de paradigma com o que lhe compartilhei aquela noite. Ele foi muito entusiasmado e desejando seguir em frente com sua jornada nas artes marciais comigo. Ele ficou muito impressionado com o que eu lhe mostrei, inlcuindo uma fagulha do Sistem HKB. E eu sempre fico impressionado quando um bem experiente Sifu ainda é mente-aberta e procurando ainda crescer. Esse é definitivamente minha impressão sobre Sifu Ian. Estou aguardando encontrar oficialmente sua família Kung Fu durante meu primeiro workshop em sua escola, agendado para Sábado, 28 de Maio.

Terça-Feira, 10 de Março

Voei de Nova Iorque para Madri, Espanha, onde tenho um contato em desenvolvimento para o VTM. Depois voei direto de Madri para Fortaleza, Brasil.

Sexta-Feira, 11 de Março

Desembarquei  em Fortaleza no final da tarde. Sifu Alex Magnos e seus estudante me encontraram no aeroporto. Vi muitos novos rostos. Dentre os novos rostos estava o Mestre Paulo Braga Filho, um autoridade em artes marciais Coreanas e o mais graduado Mestre em Hapkido no Brasil.

Depois de já acomodado, saimos para o jantar, tivemos um boa discussão sobre artes marciais e então terminamos o dia, então pude finalmente descançar depois da longa viagem. O clima estava quente e úmido, o que cria contrate com o tempo frio e seco aqui de Dayton.

Sábado, 12 de Março

Esse foi o primeiro dia de workshop, realizados na escola de Mestre Paulo. É uma escola fantastica, contendo um ginásio todo equipado com muitas máquinas e pesos livres, um salão de treino totalmente preparado... e mais uma grande piscina.

O tópico foi Wing Chun em Combate, lidando com as distâncias de combate e como o Wing Chun opera em e contra luta em distância longa, distância média e distância curta. Haviam mais de 40 participantes, com históricos diversos, incluindo muitas linhagens de Wing Chun, Hapkido, Taekwondo, Karate, Krav Maga e mesmo membros ativos da polícia e militares, bem como guarda-costas profissionais.

Depois do sucesso do workshop, passei o resto do dia dando exame para Certificação do VTM.

Domingo, 13 de Março

O dia começou com meu segundo workshop, novamente na escola do Mestre Paulo. Dessa vez o tópico era sobre Wing Chun para Defesa Passoal. Esse foi um dia ainda melhor que o anterior.

Depois de outro dia de sucesso, muitas novas amizades foram desenvolvidas e novos contatos estabelecidos. Os policiais ficam muito impressionados com a praticalidade do material que eu compatilhei, mas eu não abordei somente técnicas físicas do Wing Chun. Também abordei táticas, estratégia, conceitos e benefícios na qualidade de sua vida através do estudo das artes marciais. Também ressaltei aos instrutores profissionais que nós estamos em uma indústria que é fundamento para toda as atividades humanas: pessoal e profissional, porque nós ajudamos pessoas a se tornaram mais saudáveis, seguram com auto confiança, a se tornar melhores e mais felizes como seres humanos. Sem essas três coisas - saúde, segurança e felicidade - todas as outras atividades não irão florecer. Por exemplo, o comercio não se desenvolve para um alto nível em lugares que não há segurança.

Depois desse segundo workshop, muitos dos estudantes de Sifu Alex inscreveram-se +ara o programa de aprendizagem de HKB à distância. Passamos então o resto do dia e noite treinando no conhecimento e habilidade HKB do Programa de Orientação HKB.

Segunda-Feira, 14 de Março

Pela manhã nos reunimos e para mais um treino de HKB para membros do program de longa distância em Fortaleza. Então, fomos para a escola do Sifu Marcos Teixeira, Instituto Wing Chun, Fortaleza, Brasil,  para meu terceiro workshop sobre a Certificação do Curriculum VTM. Essa foi minha primeira vez sua escola e encotrei muitos de seus alunos. Sifu Marcos está correntemente ensinando Hong Kong WIng Chun baseado no Curriculum do VTM. Ele também expressou interesse em aprender a linhagem Hek Ki Boen.

Depois do workshop durante o dia, todos tivemos tempo para um ducha e trocar de roupa a tempo para um evento muito especial: Sifu Alex Magnos completou a Cerimônia de Baai Si e se tornou meu mais novo Discípulo. A Cerimônia aconteceu em um restaurante Chinês (reservamos o local inteiro). Sifu Alex é meu primeiro Discípulo no Brasil. Um Discípulo no somente segue nas mesmas pegadas do mestre, mas também se torna um guardião da arte que o Mestre ensina. Sifu Alex é um membro do Programa de Certificação de Instrtutor Hek Ki Boen. Ele está completamente comprometido para se tornar um representante da linhagem HKB como sua principal identidade, um representante do VTM, e um instrutor profissional em tempo integral ajudando a erguer o profissionalismo e qualidade das artes marciais oferecidas no Brasil. Desde quando nos conhecemos em 2005, Sifu Alex tem demonstrado seua lealdade, determinação, discipline e dedicação. Nós já passamos por muitas tempestades juntos e ele tem seguido minha liderança através das experiências e treinos em várias linhagens de Wing Chun: Ip Man, Hung Fa Yi e, agora, Hek Ki Boen. No Brasil, ele é um instrutor para muitos estudantes com níveis de instrutores e ele também tem estudantes em muitos diferentes estados através do país.

Depois de todas as festividades, fotos, e jantar, nós tivemos todo o restaurante somente para nós, mas eu teria preferido um autêntico um restaurante de comida brasileira porque a comida chinesa era menos chinesa que a brasileira jamais poderia ser.

Terça-Feria, 15 de Março

Meu último dia no Brasil foi dedicado mais para Vida Kung Fu - discussão sobre a natureza das coisas e amizade uns com os outros.
